Esslingen am Neckar is located at a narrow point of the Neckar valley in the heart of Baden-Württemberg and is only a few kilometers southeast of Stuttgart city center. This industrial city, which flourished early on, is a modern and important economic and educational center and is strongly influenced by its extraordinary urban history. In the historic old town, medieval half-timbered houses and innovative architecture meet in remarkable harmony. The cityscape of this proud imperial city is characterised by the oldest row of half-timbered houses in Germany and more than 800 architectural monuments.
In addition to the city’s history, which can be felt and experienced everywhere, Esslingen has a diverse, cultural offering. The city invites you to take an extensive stroll through the charming old town, walk through winding alleys, passing by Gothic churches and small, charming stores and wander around the idyllic Neckar canals. For a short stay, the oldest sparkling wine cellar in Germany is always worth a visit.
The Neckarstadt offers plenty of green space to relax and breathe. A perfectly situated recreational area is located between the canal arms of the Ross and Wehrneckar rivers. Here is the city island Maille – a park with playgrounds, cafes and lawns. On the more than 27 kilometer long Esslinger Höhenweg you circle the city from above. The Wine Experience Trail leads through Esslingen’s striking steep slopes. Along the way, you can pause at 20 stations and read more about Esslingen’s famous viticulture on display boards.
